Everyone wants to drive a supercar at some point. Whether it's a modern classic like the Ferrari 360 Modena or the latest twin-turbo McLaren, there are few things that live up to the hype quite like actually getting behind the wheel of one on a real circuit. But most people booking their first experience ask me the same thing before they commit: what does the day actually involve? So here's exactly what to expect, step by step, based on how these days generally run at the circuits I recommend.
You'll be asked to arrive around 30 minutes before your session time. After signing in at reception, you'll get a proper welcome from the instructing team — these are usually experienced racing or track day instructors, not just anyone handed a clipboard. It's worth bringing your voucher confirmation and, if the car requires one, your full driving licence.
Once everyone's checked in, you'll get a race-style briefing from a fully trained instructor. This covers more than just the basics — you'll learn how to read the racing line, what the flags mean if marshals need to signal you, and the circuit-specific rules for the track you're driving. It's a genuinely useful 20 minutes even if you've done a track day before, since every circuit has its own quirks.
Depending on your package, you'll usually head out first as a passenger — either in a slower car or alongside your instructor in the supercar itself — for one or two sighting laps. This is your chance to see the circuit properly before you're the one driving it: where it tightens up, where you can carry speed, and where the instructor wants you braking. It sounds like a formality, but it makes a real difference to how confident you'll feel once you're in the driving seat.
Then it's your turn. You climb in, get comfortable, and pull away with your instructor talking you through it from the passenger seat. However many laps your package includes, the pattern is usually the same — a settling-in lap or two while you get a feel for the throttle, the brakes and the steering, followed by faster, more confident laps as the circuit starts to click.
If you've booked one of the naturally-aspirated cars like a Porsche 911 GT3 RS or a Lamborghini Huracán, you'll notice the engine wants to be revved out — that's part of the theatre. If you're in something turbocharged like a McLaren 720S or Ferrari 488, the shove arrives lower down and builds fast. Either way, your instructor is there the whole time, so you can push harder each lap than you'd dare on your own.
If you've booked a Double Thrill or Triple Challenge, you'll head back to the pits between cars for a quick changeover — a short chat with your instructor about how the last car felt, then straight into the next one. This is usually the part people enjoy talking about most afterwards, since driving two contrasting cars back to back genuinely changes how you experience each one.
All good things come to an end, and once you pull back into the pits for the final time, you'll get a short debrief from your instructor — usually a few pointers on how you did and what you'd feel even more on a second visit. Most packages include a commemorative certificate, and depending on what you've booked, there are often options to add on professional photography, onboard video, or lunch at the venue. These make brilliant extras if you're planning to show off the day to friends and family afterwards — and most people do.
Flat, comfortable shoes are essential — trainers are ideal, and thick-soled boots or sandals aren't allowed in most cars. Bring your licence if the car requires one, your voucher or booking confirmation, and dress for the weather if you're spending time in the paddock between sessions. Everything else — helmets where required, safety equipment, and instruction — is provided by the venue.
